Epic Games has announced the 2026 Epic AI MegaJam, a four-day competition running from November 12 to 15 in which developers create playable games using Unreal Engine or Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). The event carries a $65,000 cash prize pool and offers development continuation grants of up to $50,000 for standout projects so teams can keep working after the jam concludes. Registration is open on the official itch.io page.

Event Structure and Participation Rules
Teams may consist of one developer or up to five people, with no limit on the number of AI agents they can use. Each team must choose either Unreal Engine or UEFN; dual submissions are not allowed. Participants can work fully online, join local Unreal Engine community events, or attend an in-person gathering at Digital Jungle in San Francisco on November 14 and 15. In-person spots are limited and registration opens November 1.
A kickoff livestream on November 11 at 11 a.m. PST / 2 p.m. EST will reveal the theme. Daily livestreams during the jam will provide tips and updates. Submissions close on November 15 at 5:59 p.m. PST / 8:59 p.m. EST. Winners are scheduled to be announced by January 29, 2027. Developers must be at least 18 years old and hold an active Epic Games account. Pre-jam setup of tools is permitted, but actual game building may not begin before November 12.
Prizes and Continuation Grants
Main category prizes are structured as follows:
- Best Overall, Unreal Engine: $7,500 first, $5,000 second, $2,500 third
- Best Overall, UEFN: $7,500 first, $5,000 second, $2,500 third
- Best Student Project (Unreal Engine or UEFN, for currently enrolled higher-education students): $7,500 first, $5,000 second, $2,500 third
Additional modifier categories award $5,000 for Best Team and $2,500 each for categories including best solo developer project, best visuals, best mobile game (one winner for Unreal Engine and one for UEFN), best development log documenting the build process, and best narrative-driven UEFN game featuring LLM-powered NPCs with conversational AI.
Beyond the cash prizes, Epic will award development continuation grants for standout Unreal Engine and UEFN entries. According to the official jam page, these include $50,000, $25,000, and $10,000 amounts in each track so selected teams can continue development after the event. Participants retain ownership of their games under the official rules.
AI Tools and Technical Approach
Epic explicitly encourages the use of any AI tools, from coding agents and asset generation to audio and writing assistance. The company highlights Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration for connecting agents to the Unreal Editor. Official materials state that participants should “bring any AI tools into your workflow” and “prototype the mechanic you never had time for, or try the art style you weren’t sure you could pull off.”
AI use is optional. Epic clarified on X that an earlier FAQ version incorrectly described AI as required; the company updated the rules to confirm developers may use as little or as much AI as they choose. One specialized category specifically rewards games that incorporate LLM-powered characters in UEFN.
This jam follows Epic’s recent public discussion of AI-assisted development, including its October announcement of a new Epic Games Launcher preview that the company described as having been vibe-coded. CEO Tim Sweeney has separately stated that Epic is retooling teams “for maximum AI acceleration,” with the stated aim of enabling developers to build more and better content.
Industry Context
Game jams have long served as rapid prototyping environments. The 2026 AI MegaJam is distinguished by its explicit support for AI agents alongside traditional human teams and by the size of the continuation grants relative to typical jam prizes. Whether the event produces commercially viable titles will depend on judging criteria that include ambition, innovation, fun factor, gameplay, visuals, level design, and audio, as well as post-jam follow-through by grant recipients.
Full rules, submission requirements, and eligibility details are available on the official 2026 Epic AI MegaJam itch.io page and the Unreal Engine announcement.
